Festival of Lessons and Carols
Lessons and Carols relates the story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus through nine short Bible readings interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols and hymns.
The Festival of Lessons and Carols originated in England, with the first formal service held at Truro Cathedral in 1880. But the established tradition began at King's College, Cambridge in 1918, created by a former army chaplain who wanted to reconnect a war-weary public with Christian worship.
